Neilson Library Project

The Honor Of A Lifetime.

It was a tremendous honor to design nine different pieces of furniture for this momentous project. The work of Maya Lin, the architectural designer of Smith College’s revamped Neilson Library, is noted for its environmental components, such as the significant increase in natural light that’s a vital part of the renovation. Similarly, we used the natural contours of wooden boards. Only the bark of a tree is removed, and minor imperfections such as knots and uneven edges are retained.

SMITH COLLEGE

New Life For A Campus Landmark

When we had to take down that 125 year old stately Elm tree to reroute campus utilities around the Neilson Library construction, who would guess that such a loss would result in these beautiful live edge furniture pieces that grace each floor of the new library. I am delighted that we put this project in your [Gill CC Woodworks] capable hands. Thanks so much for creating this furniture that will be a delight to all those entering the library for generations to come.
